Children’s Mission Work
Thank you so much to the congregation for supporting the children’s effort to help the East Coast Animal League! The children are so excited that they are able to help these homeless animals, a way for them to learn how to spread God’s love across the country.  We are still collecting donations for the Capital Humane Society–so if you have extra shoeboxes, trash bags, or jars of peanut butter, the animals will sure appreciate it!!
In the next couple of months, the children will be working on more mission projects, and they need your help!!  If you would like to help lead our young people to a life of serving, please volunteer!  Children’s mission time is from 9:45-10:00 on Sunday mornings.
Spring is in the Air!!
With the arrival of warmer weather (hopefully :) comes thinking about the great outdoors!  The children will be finding time to visit the Grow Ground again on Sunday mornings to learn about God’s creation.  Additionally, the children will be adopting a garden plot again this year with the Community Crops garden across the street.  We will be working hard in the next month to get both of these places looking great so that we can teach our kids about taking care of our wonderful world.
Here is a wish list, if you have any of the following, please consider donating!
 Grow Ground:
* trees, plants and seeds
* mulch
* spray paint and acrylic paint
* wooden planter boxes

February Kids News

We are very excited to offer a new Lenten study series this Lenten season here at 1PC!  The series will be on Wednesday nights Feb. 20-March 27.  Along with a provided supper and Fellowship at F3 (no dishes!!), there will be opportunities for children, youth and adults to journey in age-appropriate groups into a deeper understanding of Lent.

The children’s Lenten study will be full of dramatic stories, service projects and crafts designed to help the children understand Jesus’ life and teachings.  We will also learn about the events of Holy Week and why they are so important to our lives as Christians.

We encourage your family to make plans to attend these weekly studies this Lenten season.  Share in a church-provided meal at 6pm, followed by study from 6:45-7:30.  Opportunities for children’s classes, youth classes and adult classes will be available.

GET YOUR VALENTINE’S CHOCOLATE HERE!!!

Say “I love you!” to all of your Valentines by supporting the Children’s Mission project on Sunday, Feb. 10th.  Fairly-traded chocolate will be sold after both services, at 8:30 in the office hallway and at 11:00 in the East Entrance.

The children have chosen to support the North Shore Animal League, to help the animals left behind from Hurricane Sandy.  Animal League America continues to conduct emergency rescue and relief efforts for the animals and people affected by Hurricane Sandy. Since they opened our emergency animal shelter on Sunday, October 28 at Mitchel Field in Nassau County, NY, they have taken in over 400 animals that were displaced when their owners had to evacuate their homes.In addition to providing shelter, they are making sure that every animal receives food, water, medical treatment and, just as important, compassionate care until they can be reunited with their families.

Supporting the children’s project not only supports the Animal League, but also, by choosing Equal Exchange fairly traded products, you help provide small-scale farmers with the support, income, and resources they wouldn’t have otherwise.  And, you have great chocolate to give your VALENTINE!!!

Support the Children’s Mission Project—

Our children are collecting donations for the Capital Humane Society.  If you have any of the following items, please bring them to church and give them to a child!!

* Shoeboxes

* Old towels and blankets

* Cat and Dog food (Purina preferred)

* Peanut Butter

Share the Christmas JOY!!!

Greetings 1PC Families!!!

Today is the last day of November, and I always feel like Dec. 1st is like pressing the START button for a month-long celebration of the Gift of Christmas.  Although all of these happenings can seem overwhelming, I always think that the more ways I can share in the fellowship of friends and family, the more opportunity I have to share the joy of the Christmas season.  I hope you all have time in the days ahead to enjoy the celebrations!

December Opportunities here at 1PC:

* THIS SUNDAY is our annual ADVENT EVENT; conveniently timed with our youth’s PANCAKE FEED.  Join us after the 11:00 worship service (12:30-2pm) as we celebrate the season of anticipation with Advent-themed crafts and activities.  We will also be making cards for our church members who can’t be with us on Sunday mornings, and warm scarves for our neighbor families at Jacob’s Well.  Pancakes will be served from 9:30-1pm.

* Family Fun Night Wednesday Dec. 5–come to F3 for a pot-luck supper followed by family-friendly board games (Pictionary, Yahtzee, Trouble, or bring one you like to play as a family!) 6-7:30pm

* Saturday, December 15th, from 4-7pm, 1PC will be hosting a Parent’s Afternoon Out at the church building.  Parents can drop off kids for an afternoon of crafts and games; pizza supper; and rehearsal for the Children’s Christmas Program.  (those with speaking roles are highly encouraged to attend, if at all possible!!)  Parents can enjoy an afternoon out to finish up Christmas shopping!  :)
***Please RSVP to this event so we know how much pizza and crafts to plan for!!  Email Steph:  kidsmin@fpclincoln.org or call the church @ 402-477-6037 x 108

* Our children have worked very hard the last few weeks to prepare for our Children’s Christmas Program on Sunday, Dec. 16th at the 11:00 service.  Invite your friends and family to come and see what “The Case of the Missing Meaning” is all about!  Ring and Sing and Kaleidoscope will also be sharing music on this day.

* Families with young children are encouraged to attend our Family-Friendly Christmas Eve service at 5pm Dec. 24.  This service will have opportunities for children to participate in worship through music, a family-friendly message, and interacting with Nativity characters.  There will also be a traditional candle-lighting ceremony.

The children at First Presbyterian learned about world religions and hung symbols on one tree as part of their participation in our Interfaith Worship.

Summer has sprung! (Already!!!)

What a wonderful time of year to celebrate God’s creation!  As part of their spiritual development process, young children look at the natural world to help explain their questions about how the world came to be.  Through hands-on experiences, children learn about the wonderful world around them and the wonderful God who made it!  At First Presbyterian Church, we’d like to provide more of those natural-world opportunities for children.  We have two exciting projects coming up this summer, and we need your help to make them happen!

First, the children at First Presbyterian Church have worked very hard to help support the Community CROPS garden going in across 18th street from the church.  Now, it’s almost time to get to work!  We will be responsible for one plot in the garden, as well as the surrounding flower bed.  Obviously, our kiddos will love taking care of the plants on Sundays, but we are looking for people throughout the week who would be able to come to the garden to water and weed.  Ideally, it would be one day a week if we have enough families.  Please email/call Steph to volunteer!

Second, we are beginning to make plans for developing an outdoor learning space for the kids to learn and play first-hand with natural elements.  This learning space will include trees, branches, rocks, plants, and lots of recycled and reused materials.  Printed below  is a list of requested materials—if you happen to have any, feel free to drop them off!  Also, we will need to have some people-power to set everything up.  Please let Steph know if you would like to be involved in building the learning space.  We are planning to have a work day on Saturday, May 26th.  Thanks in advance for your willingness to help!

Children’s Music Appreciation Day

Sunday, May 13th will be our Children’s Music Appreciation Day.  Ring and Sing and Kaleidoscope will both be sharing music with the 11:00 congregation that day, as well as sending a special message to their families in honor of Mother’s Day.  Please plan to join us, and invite your families!

Play!

School is almost out!!!  While the kids cheer, parents look for things to do with the kiddos that are inexpensive, fun and meaningful.  Luckily, we have an opportunity for all of that through First Presbyterian!

Each Tuesday throughout the summer, we’d like to invite you and your family (and other friends and neighbors) to our Play! Program!  This is a great way to connect with other church families in a relaxed and informal environment, as well as a wonderful way to allow our kids to learn about God’s Big Backyard. We will alternate morning/evening times each Tuesday and meet at our new outdoor learning area here at First Presbyterian.   (If the weather is bad, we’ll find an indoor location like the Joyo Theatre)

No need to RSVP.

Fun and FREE!

If you would like to be involved in planning a simple craft or bringing a small snack for the kids, let Steph know!

The first playdate will be on June 5th, from 6-8pm!

VBS

Vacation Bible School planning has begun!!!  This year’s theme is all about God’s UNDERWATER world.  VBS will be July 8-11 (Sunday through Wednesday) from 9am-noon each day.  We’ll have our final family celebration Wednesday, July 11th at 6pm in conjunction with F3.

Here are some VBS planning projects that are underway:

Calling all artistic people!!!

We are very excited to turn our Fellowship Hall into a very large aquarium!  We will be making props for VBS each Sunday throughout the month of June at our VBS Props Class.  Join us from 9:15-10:15 in the youth room (216) to express your inner creativity and make some “fishy” creatures to be used for VBS!

**Also, if you like to do woodworking or building projects, never fear, you can build stuff for VBS!  Talk to Steph for specifics!

Teachers needed!

 Did you used to love doing science projects?  What about always wanting to play games in P.E.?  Maybe you just LOVE making name tags?  Whatever your interest area, there are opportunities to use your interests and gifts to serve.  Helping with VBS is a wonderful way to connect with our young people and teach them about God.  We are looking for all kinds of teachers and helpers, for anything and everything!  (crafts, snacks, games, skits, even science projects!)  Sign up to help online at:  http://overboard.cokesburyvbs.com/fpclincoln

March Newsletter

THANK YOU,                                               FIRST PRESBYTERIAN!!!

The children would like to thank the congregation for supporting their recent mission project “A Just and Loving Valentine’s Day” Fair-Trade chocolate sales!  With your support, we raised money to help with the Community CROPS program.  All the kids are very excited about the garden going in across the street, and have been learning each week something they can do to help take care of God’s Green Earth.  We also learned about what “Fair Trade” means:  about how being treated and paid fairly is a human right and improves the lives of families in need.   This project will really help the kids learn to love their neighbors, both here in Lincoln and around the world!

Children’s Mission Focus:  ”In the Garden”
“You let us rule everything your hands have made.” Psalm 8:6  This verse is a reminder of our responsibility to be caretakers of the earth.  The person who wrote the psalm is talking to God.  God wants us to rule over the earth.  A good ruler, like a good king or queen, takes care of everyone and everything in his or her kingdom.  When we grow plants we are being good rulers; we are taking care of the earth.

Green Family Activity for the month:

* create terrariums out of the bottoms of 2-liter bottle bottoms.
* place pebbles, sand, a smashed charcoal briquette and soil in the bottom.  As you put in the soil, talk about how God created all different colors of soil.
*  plant small plants such as ivies, mosses or ferns.  Talk about how planting small plants keeps the soil healthy, and is a way to take care of God’s soil
* water the plants lightly.  Talk about how water is essential for life.
* place bottle top on and secure with tape to close the terrarium
* place the terrarium in indirect sunlight

Family Fun Night March 7th
Come on down to church Wednesday evening for a great night of family activities.  This month’s theme is “God Never Lied, What’s Important is Inside”  and will include science experiments and discussion.
Bring a dish to share at 6pm (no dishes afterwards!!!); activities and discussion starts at 6:45.  Finished by 7:30 for those early bedtimes!
Hope to see you all there!

We’re thinking about VBS…
I know it seems early but as you are making your summer plans, please consider keeping July 8-11 open for VBS!   We welcome everyone to volunteer and/or bring children for this amazing event.  This year’s theme is called “Operation Overboard”, where kids dare to dive deep with God.  If you have any “underwater” scenery or supplies to make underwater scenes—blue cellophane, plastic fish, old scuba diving equipment, etc.—we would love to put it to good use for the week!  Thanks so much for your willingness to support VBS–we’re looking forward to an amazing week!

Synod School
The Synod School Committee is visioning a whole new Synod School elementary program that will closely mirror the adult program.  It will include a wide variety of workshops led by people passionate about their topic and ready to share it with kids.  The goal is to capture the learning styles and imaginations of all our kids and allow them to experience Synod School in a whole new way– Origami, Pantomime, packing school kids for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, cooking no-bake recipes, taekwondo, nature walks, dancing, basic Bible skills, beginning crochet, tales from distant lands….these are all experiences that children can have at Synod School.  This year’s class is from July 22-27. We would love to have lots of families join us!  Visit www.lakesandprairies.org for more info!
